Introductory course

This course was originally designed as an introductory resource to develop staff and student knowledge of what decolonisation means within the context of the university, and within the Business School.

This resource was created in 2022 and represents our approach to decolonisation at that point in time. It is offered as a reflective guide rather than a fixed framework, and we recognise that understandings and practices continue to develop.

Decolonisation takes many forms and is understood and practised in different ways.

This course offers a starting point for exploring what decolonisation means to you, drawing on insights from across disciplines to guide your enquiry. Drawing on literature across multiple disciplines, the course guides you through the different aspects to consider as you begin the journey into decolonisation.

The topics are:

  • History and empire
  • Decolonising the university
  • Decolonising the business school
  • Steps to decolonising the curriculum
  • Decolonising pedagogies

Within each section, there is a quick introduction, the relevant literature, terminology and an overview of what the topic means, in theory and/or in practice. There is a range of resources provided, which includes traditional academic literature like journals and papers, but also YouTube videos, podcasts and blogs. Literature specifically looking at decolonisation practices within the business school and its disciplines is sparse, and this course purposefully uses a more generalised approach to decolonisation literature to allow you to gain a foundation into the decolonial turn, and what it means for your discipline. Alongside the resources, there are a number of activities and questions that we encourage you to reflect on and engage with.
